The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process whereby adults become members of the Catholic Church. It is not “convert classes,” but rather it is an entire process of formation where one learns not only knowledge about Catholicism, but is also formed into living a Catholic Christian life. It is not an educational experience that involves tests and book learning, but rather it is a formational one that helps a person to develop a deep relationship with Jesus Christ and to be immersed in the life of the Church. The process leads to the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation — Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.
Coming on board to begin the process of becoming Catholic starts with contacting the parish offices!
If you are unbaptized:
Welcome! We are thrilled that you are interested in exploring the possibility of becoming Catholic. You will embark on a process along with other adults that will lead to the three Sacraments of Initiation, Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist, which will be celebrated at an Easter Vigil. You can look forward to a process of learning and of becoming a member of our community that will involve meetings once or twice a week for approximately two years or so.
If you are a baptized non-Catholic Christian and want to become Catholic:
Welcome! We are thrilled that you are interested in exploring the possibility of becoming Catholic. You will embark on a process along with other adults whose length of time will depend on the amount of formation that you have had in your church. After a suitable period of formation in the Catholic tradition, you will be ritually received into the Catholic Church during Easter Time through a profession of faith, the celebration of Confirmation, and receiving the Eucharist.
If you are a baptized Catholic but did not receive First Holy Communion and Confirmation:
Welcome! We are thrilled that you want to complete your initiation into the Catholic Church. We have a process for you that will allow you to be properly formed so that you can celebrate your First Holy Communion and Confirmation, which may take place during Easter Time, or even at some other time of the year.
Don’t worry — you won’t be in a religious education class with children! You’ll be part of a process with other adults who are in a similar situation as yours!
If you are a baptized Catholic who has also received First Holy Communion, and who needs only Confirmation to complete your initiation into the Church:
This is easy! Welcome! Technically, you are not part of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, since you have already received First Holy Communion. You will become part of an Adult Confirmation Preparation (you’ll be with other adults — not with eighth-graders!) preparing to receive Confirmation at the next Pentecost.
