The Ministry of Consolation is a ministry which reaches out to families at the time of the death of a loved one. This ministry assists the family in preparing and celebrating the Funeral Mass. It is a focused ministry that takes place around the time of and at the Funeral Mass. The Ministry of Consolation offers a wide variety of ways for different people to be involved according to their strengths and interests. The different ministries involved in the Ministry of Consolation are: Coordinator, Companion, Altar Server, Computer People, Greeters, Cake Bakers, and Readers.
The Coordinator calls all the people needed to fill roles for the Mass, and attends the Mass to ensure everything goes well.
The Companion meets with the family to gather information for the priest as well as to help the family to select the readings and music for the Mass. The Companion also helps the family to decide which members will be involved in various roles in the Mass such as doing one or more of the readings, placing the pall on the coffin, and presenting the gifts of bread and wine. The Companion will make a visit to the funeral home to meet with everyone who was selected and to review with them what they are to do at the Mass. The Companion also functions as a kind of “M.C.” at the Mass by escorting all of these people at the correct time during the Mass. As you can see, the role of the Companion is a very important one that ministers directly to the family and therefore becomes the face of the Church to them.
The Altar Server assists the priest by performing various tasks at and around the altar during Mass.
The Greeters act as ushers at the Mass, handing out booklets and directing the mourners to their seats. Greeters also may act as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at the Mass.
The Computer People make the booklets which serve as worship aids at the Mass; the booklets contain the information that the Companion has gathered from the family.
The Cake Baker will bake and deliver a cake, along with a condolence card from the parish, to the family, as an expression of care and concern.
The Reader will proclaim the readings and the Prayer of the Faithful, if there are to be no readers from the family.
There are many different ministries that make up the Ministry of Consolation, and one or more of them probably fits you! We want you to consider joining this life-giving ministry which reaches out to and assists people at a very critical and sensitive time, when they are mourning the death of a loved one. This ministry is one of the ways we can truly be Church to and for one another.
